          Household dish of "God's own country",appam is a traditional dish of Kerala,used generally as breakfast. A stew,whether it is veg or non-veg,is served with appam. This  delicious zero-oil recipe,in my opinion,will win lots of food lovers heart. Here,I have followed the authentic method to prepare and made this dish.



Preparation time : for soaking - 4 to 5 hrs.

                             for fermenting - 8 to 10 hrs
Cooking time :      30 mins
Servings :             12-13 pieces


Ingredients :


  • Raw rice - 2 cups
  • Par-boiled(cooked) rice - 1 cup
  • Salt - 1 tsp.
  • Sugar - 1 tsp.
  • Coconut - 1/2(grated)
  • Dry yeast - 3/4 tsp
Method :
  • Pick,wash and soak the rice in enough water for about 4 to 5 hrs
  • Drain out the water. In a mixie,grind it with the cooked par-boiled rice,grated coconut and some amount of water. Consistency of the batter neither should be thick,nor thin.


  • Now, in this batter,add the salt,sugar and the yeast. Mix well.


  • Cover and keep in a warm place to ferment.
  • After it gets fermented,stir well.

  • Take an appam wolk or pan,and heat it on medium flame.
  • Lower the flame,pour a ladle full of the batter into the wolk. Spread the batter roundwise,and cover the pan with a lid,keeping the flame medium low. Cook for about 2 mins.



  • Open the lid,check and lift the appam. Take out of the wolk and keep on a plate.
  • Your appam is ready.
  • Serve hot with stew.
